Most people if not everyone who has worn false lashes, will agree with me when I say that applying false lashes can be a bit tricky, especially for beginners. And when I say tricky, I mean getting glue all over your eyelids, before giving up and abandoning the lashes altogether kind of tricky! The good news is that all it takes to master the art of applying falsies is practice and patience. That along with a few hacks and tricks and you’ll be a Pro in no time.

Below, are 7 simple yet effective hacks that will come in handy for anyone who wears false eyelashes.

  1. Prep your natural lashes, and do all of your eye makeup before applying the lashes.Besides the touch of eyeliner or mascara that you may need for blending your natural lashes with false lashes, putting on faux lashes should come last in your eye makeup routine. Applying all TLC products such as lash serums and the rest of your eye makeup before putting on the lashes ensures minimal interference with your faux lashes. This not only allows the glue to dry up smoothly but also ensures minimal damage to your falsies, so you can get more reuses out of them!
  2. Trim your Falsies. Most faux lashes hardly fit perfectly out of the pack. They come a bit too wide and need to be trimmed to fit your eyes. The trick to getting this right is to always cut them at the vein, from the outside edge, not through the lashes! Pro Tip, If you aren’t sure of making one precise cut, Trim a little bit at a time. This can prevent you from cutting off too much and destroying the whole strip. If you use this method, place the lashes on your eye after each trim to check if it fits perfectly.
  3. Choose the right adhesive. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to pick the right adhesive for applying false lashes. Choosing the wrong glue could have your lashes losing grip throughout the day or irritate your skin, and don’t even get me started on the annoying white flakes that are left behind by some glues! To avoid this, opt for a lash glue that has a decent hold, dries clear or black, and preferably a latex-free one. I recommend the Lash Barb Cosmetics Brush on adhesive
  4. Wrap the lashes around a makeup brush, or any cylindrical object for a few minutes before putting them on. Seriously, you’ll be surprised at how much difference this trick makes when applying false lashes. Wrapping the lashes around a makeup brush ensures that the curve of the lashes mimics the natural eye curve, and also makes the lashes less stiff. This prevents the lashes from popping when applying, and makes them less likely to flip outwards at the corners after the application.
  5. Double glue the edges of your lashes. What’s worse, catching yourself in the mirror during a date and realizing that one of your falsies is lifting off, or getting home from work just to notice your falsies are lifted and have to wonder how many people saw you like that? Applying a little extra glue on the edges, is a simple yet effective trick that will spare you from the dreaded lift, by ensuring better adhesion of the lashes on all corners.
  6. Always allow the glue to get tacky before applying the lashes. This is one of the most important hacks that most people miss. If you put glue on a lash and immediately try to apply it, it will move all over the place, ruining the rest of your eye makeup, and leaving your eyelid with a gluey mess. The trick is to leave the glue to dry a bit so it’s tacky when you apply it. That way, when you place the strip on your lash line, it won’t slide around, it will just stick!
  7. Look down in your mirror. Instead of looking straight ahead or upwards while applying your faux lashes, place a mirror in a position that allows you to look down. This will give you a better view of your natural lash line allowing you to place the false lash as close as possible to your lash line. Looking down in your mirror also means that the eyelid is stretched out, so the skin doesn’t crinkle as it does when you are facing upwards.
